FAQ

About Functional Mushrooms

What are functional mushrooms?

Functional mushrooms are species of fungi that have been used in traditional medicine,
particularly in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) — for thousands of years.
Unlike the mushrooms you'd put on a pizza, they're valued for the bioactive
compounds they contain, most notably beta-glucans, which support the body's
natural ability to adapt to stress and maintain balance.

Common examples include Lion's Mane (linked to focus and cognitive support), Cordyceps
(energy and stamina), Reishi (calm and stress resilience), and Schisandra (an
adaptogenic berry with deep TCM roots).

What's the difference between functional mushrooms and psychedelic mushrooms?

Nothing in common. Functional mushrooms are entirely legal, non-psychoactive food
supplements. They contain no psilocybin or any other psychedelic compounds.
They don't alter your state of mind — they support your body's baseline systems
gradually and consistently.

What are adaptogens?

Adaptogens are a class of herbs and fungi that help the body respond to physical, mental, and environmental stress more effectively. Rather than forcing a specific
outcome — like caffeine forcing alertness or a sedative forcing sleep — adaptogens support your body's own balancing mechanisms over time. Rhodiola,
Schisandra, and many functional mushrooms are all considered adaptogens.

What are beta-glucans, and why do they matter?

Beta-glucans are naturally occurring fibres found in the cell walls of functional mushrooms.

They're the primary active compound responsible for most of the research-backed
benefits associated with mushroom supplements — particularly immune and stress support.

When buying any mushroom supplement, beta-glucan content is the most reliable
quality indicator. A good supplement will list the beta-glucan percentage clearly on the label. If it doesn't, or if it only lists total polysaccharides (which includes starches), you may not be getting what you're paying for.

What's the difference between fruiting body and mycelium?

The fruiting body is the actual mushroom — the part you'd recognise above ground.
The mycelium is the fungal root network underneath. Most research on functional
mushrooms focuses on the fruiting body, which typically contains a higher
concentration of beta-glucans and other active compounds.

Some cheaper supplements use mycelium-on-grain, which is grown on rice or oats and
can contain significant amounts of starch filler. QiMycology uses fruiting body
extracts only.

About QiMycology

What is QiMycology?

QiMycology creates functional mushroom and adaptogen supplements designed to support focus, calm, and recovery — without stimulants, sedatives, or exaggerated claims. Our formulas are informed by traditional Chinese medicine principles and designed for daily, long-term use.

What makes QiMycology different from other mushroom supplement brands?

A lot of the mushroom supplement market is poorly labelled, underdosed, or uses
mycelium-on-grain instead of actual mushroom extracts. We do things
differently:

Fruiting body extracts only
— no mycelium-on-grain filler

Third-party tested for
quality and purity

Evidence-informed dosing — ingredients chosen intentionally, not for marketing appeal

No fillers, no additives,no proprietary blends hiding the real amounts

Honest expectations — we tell you what these products are designed to do, and what they're not

Are your products tested?

Yes. All QiMycology products are third-party tested for quality and purity before they go on sale. We don't rely on in-house testing alone.

Choosing the Right Product

What products do you offer?

We currently offer two blends, designed to work together or independently:

•  Qi Adaptogen Blend — for
daytime focus, clarity, and steady energy. Contains Lion's Mane, Rhodiola,
Schisandra, and Cordyceps.

•  Qi Harmony Blend — for
evening calm, nervous system recovery, and deeper rest.

Which product should I start with?

That depends on what you're looking to support:

If your main goal is focus,
mental clarity, and sustained energy during the day — start with Qi Adaptogen.

If your main challenge is
switching off, winding down, or getting better rest — start with Qi Harmony.

If you want to support both
— many people use both as a day-night routine.

Not sure? Visit our Beginner's Guide for a more detailed walkthrough.

Do I need both products?

No. Each product is designed to work on its own. Pairing them is optional — it
simply means you're supporting both daytime performance and night-time recovery as part of a full daily rhythm.

Using the Products

How do I use these products?

Both blends come as a fine powder. Add one scoop to:

Coffee or espresso
Hot water with milk of your
choice
A smoothie or protein shake
Oatmeal or any other food you have daily

The powder blends easily and has a mild, earthy flavour that pairs well with
coffee, oat milk, or anything with its own flavour.

When should I take each product?

Qi Adaptogen Blend: Best taken in the morning or early afternoon. Avoid taking
late in the day if you're sensitive to anything that supports alertness.

Qi Harmony Blend: Best taken 30–60 minutes before bed, as part of an evening
wind-down routine.

Can I take these every day?

Yes — that's exactly how they're designed to be used. Both products are non-stimulant and non-sedative, which means they're safe and appropriate for daily, long-term use.

Consistency is key with functional mushrooms: the benefits build gradually rather than appearing overnight.

Can I take them together?

Yes. Qi Adaptogen (morning) and Qi Harmony (evening) are designed to complement each other and can be used as a full daily routine.

What to Expect

How long does it take to feel the effects?

Functional mushrooms work cumulatively, not acutely. Most people notice subtle shifts
within 1–2 weeks, with more consistent, noticeable changes over 3–4 weeks of
daily use. If you're used to supplements that hit you immediately, this feels different — steadier and more sustainable.

These products are not designed for instant effects. If you're
looking for something that works immediately, these may not be the right fit — and we'd rather be honest about that upfront.

Why might the effects feel subtle?

Adaptogens and functional mushrooms support your body's own balancing systems rather than overriding them. This means the effects tend to feel like an improvement in
your baseline — better focus, less friction in switching off at night — rather than a distinct hit. That steadiness is the point.

Will Qi Adaptogen give me an energy boost?

Not in the way caffeine does. Qi Adaptogen is completely non-stimulant — it won't
give you a spike, and it won't cause a crash.

What it's designed to do is support calm focus and sustained mental clarity. Think of it as supporting your existing energy rather than manufacturing artificial alertness on top of it.

Will Qi Harmony make me feel drowsy or groggy?

No. Qi Harmony is not a sedative and is not designed to knock you out. It's
designed to support nervous system unwinding and relaxation — helping your body transition into rest more naturally. Used as directed, it should not cause
grogginess the following morning.

Ingredients & Quality

What mushrooms are in your products?

QiAdaptogen Blend: Lion's Mane

Qi Harmony Blend: Reishi

Do your products contain caffeine?

No. All QiMycology products are caffeine-free.

Are your products vegan?

Yes. All QiMycology products are 100% vegan and contain no animal-derived
ingredients.

Do you use fillers or additives?

No. We intentionally keep our formulas clean and focused — only ingredients that
earn their place. No bulking agents, no flow agents, no flavourings or
sweeteners.

What does the powder taste like?

Both blends have a mild, earthy flavour typical of mushroom extracts. On their own
in water they taste quite herbal; mixed into coffee, oat milk, or a smoothie the flavour blends in naturally and most people find it pleasant. We'd describe it as earthy and mild rather than strong or bitter.

Safety & Lifestyle

Are there any side effects?

Functional mushrooms are generally very well tolerated. Reported side effects are rare and typically mild — the most common is digestive discomfort (bloating, loose
stools) if taken on an empty stomach or at higher doses than recommended.
Starting with a smaller amount and building up is a sensible approach if you
have a sensitive stomach.

Allergic reactions to mushrooms are rare but possible. If you know you're sensitive to
fungi, consult a healthcare professional before use.

Can I take these with coffee?

Yes — and many people add Qi Adaptogen directly to their morning coffee. The earthy
flavour pairs well with coffee. If you're gradually reducing your caffeine intake, some people find functional mushrooms a helpful part of that transition.

Can I take these with other supplements?

In most cases, yes. If you're taking prescription medication — particularly blood
thinners, immunosuppressants, or medication for blood pressure — consult your GP or pharmacist before adding any new supplement, as functional mushrooms can have mild effects on platelet activity and blood pressure.

Can I take these if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?

We recommend consulting a healthcare professional before using any supplement
during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

I have an autoimmune condition — can I take these?

Functional mushrooms can have immunomodulatory effects, which means they interact with immune function. If you have an autoimmune condition or are taking
immunosuppressant medication, please consult your healthcare professional before use.

Are these products suitable for children?

Our products are formulated for adults. We do not recommend them for children under
18.
